first sunflower

I'm not sure - it's too late in the evening for me to check back - but I'm pretty certain my ritualistic First Sunflower photo is taken at the same spot most years.  Why should this be?  A combination of soil dampness, and sun?  An original sunflower that happened to bloom very early, and passed on its genes?  Rather late in the day, I planted masses of variegated sunflower seeds today, both behind and in front of the house, and will fervently hope that some of them come up ... mind you, at the front, there were ants descending on the seeds within about thirty seconds, wanting to cart them off even before I'd covered over the mini-trenches: that was a horticultural assault I'd not been anticipating ...
