last seen ... fifty plus years ago

Yes ... it's London Bridge!  The London Bridge - bought in auction in the 1960s, and re-created here, numbered stone by numbered stone, in the Arizona desert - or more precisely, over a side-arm of Lake Havasu, a reservoir formed by damming the Colorado River.  Apparently it's the second biggest tourist attraction in Arizona, after the Grand Canyon.  Having heard that it had been bought and shipped and placed in a desert, I imagined for decades that it was - well, sitting in the desert, like Ozymandias's vast and trunkless legs of stone, with sands rolling away in all arid directions.  But of course it's not quite like that - Lake Havasu is a water-sports resort, presumably unbearably hot in summer, and surrounded by very rocky bits of mountain.  For years we've driven past signs to London Bridge as we drive down I-40: today was the day for a detour.

Lake Havasu City is a strange place, too, and, one knows and feels, a bastion of Trumpery and the non-masked - built up after WW2, and a suburban sprawl.  I can't imagine that we'll make a habit of coming here - but we had to do it once, and why not spend our wedding anniversary here?  We celebrated with dancing in and out of one of the London telephone booths, and then pasta cooked in our room's kitchenette, and a bottle of champagne ...
