party at the Coliseum

A wonderful party this afternoon/evening to celebrate David St John, who has been chair of the English department for the last nine years, and who's done a superlative job.  It was quite something to go to a party in the President's Suite in what was an echoingly empty stadium - quite different (it goes without saying) from football games... And we went on a tour, and got to go into the locker room - pretty magnificent (they seemed to be especially proud of the smell-absorbing/neutralising carpet); the visiting teams' deliberately depressing and badly laid out locker room; and then down the tunnel and onto the edge of the field (not onto it, of course, because the grass is pampered and manicured - so much so that one could swear that it's artificial, until one's close up).  It was a great occasion - and at 6 p.m. the Olympic Torch was lit in David's honor - as he said in his speech, that's not exactly something that happens to a poet very often.
