I was not visiting the National Gallery because of its proximity to the center of British ungovernment, but to go to the Winslow Homer show - which was absolutely excellent. But when I emerged - and it had, for a while, stopped raining - it seemed, weirdly, as though people were standing in some kind of impromptu prayer meeting. Of course they weren't - but this was a serendipitous photographic moment on another weird, wild political day ... indeed, about three quarters of an hour after Liz Truss resigned. I'd just sat down to check my email, etc. on a bench in the NG, and the man next to me was listening to her resignation speech, sans earphones ...
