Of course, there were some temples and shrines. But mostly I was fascinated, today, by what people hung over their doors;
or what they kept in their back parking lots.
The older parts of Kyoto are tourist magnets for Japanese as well as for Westerners, and there are many shops in which one can rent a kimono and appropriate footwear, and traipse around in picturesque fashion (selfies and cell phones have, I suspect, greatly amped up business in this respect ...)
And then there are little back street shrines, and votive objects.
And general street views -
including, incongruously, this apparently defunct Motown Lounge.
