This is the second year running that I've seen the lilac bush bloom! Last year, admittedly, was because the water supply had sprung an alarming leak; this year, I'm here for a fleeting visit just to check that all is ok: it is - no visible mice, moths, ants, malfunctioning plumbing, or anything that visibly needs attention beyond the enthusiastic tumbleweed. Oh, and the trees in our front yard - a Russian olive and a tamarind - look as though they haven't really survived the drought, but I can't mourn them too much as they crawl into what leaf production they can manage, because they are environmentally absolutely unsustainable bits of arboriculture, planted, I guess, when the house was built in 1992. Their days are, I fear, very very numbered.
So ... I plan to lock myself down for a couple of days, and catch up with numerous things, and then I'll be ready - ready? - to return ... and to attack the grading when it comes in, and navigate the last few meetings of the semester. It's great to be here,
