This is an annual miracle: from a clump of dry dead leaves these lilies - and more like them - shoot upwards during mid-August, and flower in all their pink glory. I think they're the South African Belladonna Lily, or (in SA) the March Lily - whatever, they are amazingly beautiful, seen here against a background of thick plumbago bushes.
