a surprise birdbath visitor


We were peacefully eating lunch outside ... and then glanced over to the birdbath, which was quite remarkably filling up with a large - well, medium-sized - bullsnake: drinking, cooling off, and snacking on the ants that were running round the rim.  I confess that we went inside until we'd identified it - the great thing about digital cameras is that you can instantly enlarge the image and be quite confident that there aren't any rattles at the end of the handsome striped tail.  S/he is a real beauty, and presumably the reason why we have many, many fewer gophers this summer - the best ecologically sound gopher deterrent possible ...
