Madrid to Marseille

My last morning in Madrid - and I thought I really should go and see the Royal Palace, not bargaining for the fact that the city center had been blocked off in various ways for a 10K race, which meant that I took a circuitous but very pretty route to get there - early Sunday streets, and also an apparent echo of yesterday's butterflies, although in this case part of an advertising campaign.

It is a very, very big palace, so I stared at it, not, by that point, having a whole lot of time, and headed back to the hotel, via

more streets (it was just over 5 miles there and back),

and some lunch for the train.  I don't even eat ham, in principle or indeed, normally, in fact, but this was both irresistible and delicious.

Eight and a half hours of train,

and now I'm back in a country where thankfully I can speak the language better, in a hotel just opposite Marseille station, which (so far justifiably) has surprisingly (for the location) good reviews, and is clean and quiet, and has a view from my room straight out of a Magritte painting.

  1. Madrid looks absolutely beautiful (Spain is high up on my list of places to go in the next 5 years)! Enjoy Marseilles!

  2. Definitely go to Madrid! I wish I could have spent a week there. Or longer, It is such a seductive city! (but expensive - it's interesting going from one European country to the next, and all the prices being in Euros - but that doesn't mean that everything costs the same, country to country). But I'm slowly working my way round Spain, a little bit each summer ...
