A retirement party this evening for our English Department colleague Tania Modleski - someone whose work meant a huge amount to me way way back when I was working on The Woman Reader, because her Loving With a Vengeance gave me a vocabulary to talk about the serious investments that women readers made when they were/are consuming popular fiction. I never could have dreamed or prophesied that I would have ended up in the same department. Nor, indeed, that I would ever attend a party of any kind in such a spectacular Los Angeles location - this John Lautner masterpiece, belonging to friends of Tania's, is in Silver Lake and has views in all directions, and then some ...
