inside a peony

In so many ways (so long as one has access to water, and doesn't need to employ it in guilt-inducing quantities), Southern California is a horticultural paradise - with the exception of peonies.  Because one can't grow peonies here: they need frost (maybe I should invent a frost-house - the opposite of a greenhouse?).  I didn't know that before I moved here ...  And that's why I'm always so happy if someone gives me a bunch of flowers with a peony or two on it, as a dinner party guest did the other day ...
