Japan day 3 - traveling westwards

A shuttered shop front in Hemeji - just one image from a day in which I became fascinated by the neatness and beauty of the everyday, as with these poles in the Koko-en Garden in Hemeji,

and how beautifully they're knotted together.

In turn, these echo the roof tiles in Hemeji Castle - a quite extraordinary edifice.

A couple of very touristy shots - but how else to convey how extraordinary it is?  A big shout out to VĂ©ronique, who said that I simply had to come here ... when I emailed her a picture, she asked where the tourist crowds were, and the answer is - no crowds at all.  Maybe it was too hot?

Here's a more distant shot from the Gardens, which makes even cleaning a garden pond look like homage to beauty;

and ditto, trimming the azaleas.

And in case you thought I'd forgotten to take pictures of lichen ...

But there's the whacky stuff as well.  I've seen these kind of costume cut-outs for you to stick your head in in India: evidently they are a Thing in Japan, too.

Incomprehensible slot machines;

and a bit more tourism: two shots of Mount Fuji,

and one of the canal in Kurashiki: the tiny but perfect ryokan where I'm staying is on the left.
