I have a curiously soft spot for all the paraphernalia of Commencement - the canopies, the phalanxes of white chairs, the ridiculously false gilt ones, the flimsy white paling fences ... They are peculiarly American in all their opulent tackiness, I think (at least, I've never witnessed anything remotely like them in the UK), and of course opulent tackiness is something that USC does extraordinarily well ...
