The Los Angeles Zoo is only about ten minutes drive from our house - but today was the first time that we've ever been there, despite its good reputation: not just as a conservationist and educational institution, but as a botanical gardens, too. And indeed - it was like a slice of tropical jungle, with Griffith Park rising behind. We saw a particularly handsome jaguar, only I was so over-awed I forgot to take a photograph of them. But meet a sea-lion;
a huge gathering of flamingos;
and the most adorable baby giraffe (at 6 ft 7 ins, the tallest giraffe ever born in LA Zoo - born on April 8th).
Oh - and less cuddly, some red bellied piranhas, and a poison dart tree frog.
We needed a couple of hours out, and this did the job, beautifully.
